Flats, housing,

A resident of the Knockalisheen direct provision centre in South-East Clare has hit out at the Department of Housing over its view that new proposals to eliminate direct provision would pit asylum seekers against the homeless.

An advisory group set up to wind down direct provision has recommended that asylum seekers be given own-door accommodation after three months in Ireland.

But the Department of Housing says this is unworkable, as it will result in families and individuals in direct provision competing for accommodation with families and individuals who are homeless.

Knockalisheen resident Bulelani Mfaco, who is the Spokesperson for the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, strongly rejects this.
