Lidl To Lodge Application For South East Clare Store

Calls are being made for further investment in the Westbury area ahead of the possible arrival of another major supermarket there.

Lidl has confirmed its intention to lodge a planning application for a major new store and adjoining coffee shop, adjacent to the Westbury centre.

The German supermarket giant says the planned project will enhance the current retail offering there and create around 30 jobs, should the project proceed as planned.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe, who lives in Westbury, says while the economic boost would be welcome, the infrastructure currently there can’t deal with the expected influx of traffic:

Statement from Lidl:

Lidl can confirm that it intends to lodge a planning application related to lands adjacent to the Westbury Centre, Corbally, County Clare. seeking permission for a neighbourhood centre extension development which includes a licensed discount foodstore and a coffee shop.

The proposed development is appropriate to the scale and character of the area and will complete and further enhance the Westbury Centre.

The centre currently includes units such as a CarePlus pharmacy, a launderette, beauty salon and hairdresser.

If granted this development can deliver a mixed use development that will enhance the food shopping experience for the local community and the southern hinterland of county Clare.

The proposed Lidl and adjoining coffee shop would generate approximately thirty jobs in the local area.
