McNamara couldn’t express confidence in Reilly

Clare’s Labour TD Michael McNamara denies Eamon Gilmore is losing authority over the party in the wake of Roisin Shorthall’s decision to step down as Junior Health Minister.

However Deputy McNamara admits patience is wearing thin among backbenchers in both government parties and couldn’t personally express confidence in Health Minister James Reilly now.

The Clare TD says he was deeply saddened and surprised but not shocked by Ms Shortall’s departure from her role as well as from the Labour Parliamentary Party, given the difficulties she experienced over the past few weeks.

Meanwhile,

The issue’s dominated Dáil business this morning – with the Opposition saying she was "abandoned" by her now former party.

Fianna Fáil says the clock is now ticking on James Reilly’s time in ministerial office.

Taking leaders questions, social protection minister – and Deputy Labour Leader Joan Burton admitted rows between Roisin Shortall and James Reilly has resulted in the resignation but says she had confidence in the Health Minister.
