McNamara unhappy with social welfare measures but insists he wont be jumping ship

Clare government TD Michael McNamara admits he’s very unhappy with some of the budget’s Social Welfare measures and doesn’t know how he will vote on them in the Dáil next week –

The Labour Deputy was seeking higher taxes for the wealthy and wanted child benefit to be taxed not cut as he felt it would lessen the impact on lower income families.

However this measure has been ruled out by his party’s coalition partners Fine Gael.

Deputy McNamara admits its left him questioning his future but isn’t about to walk away from Labour at the moment

Meanwhile,

The Minister for Transport says the Budget isn’t an al la carte menu.

Leo Varadkar was responding to comments by the Labour Party Chairman Colm Keaveney who says he will have to look at the whole package of budgetary measures before deciding how he will vote on them.

Minister Varadkar says the budget should not be unravelled by TDs looking to make a name for their party or their reputation – but he says it’s up to Deputy Keaveney to decide how he votes:
