A medical council fitness to practice enquiry arising out of the death of an Ennis woman who suffered a miscarriage and later died after 3 surgical proceedures at Ennis General Hospital resumes today.

Tina Sherlock died in December of 2008 after undergoing three operations under Dr. Syed Naqvi, who denies the allegations of misconduct against him

Dr. Syed Naqvi faces 11 allegations of professional misconduct and poor professional performance arising out of his care of 39 year old Martina Sherlock of Childers Road, Ennis.

The Medical Council has heard that the mother of 13 had presented at the A&E Department of Ennis General with pains in her right-hand side while 17 weeks pregnant in June 2008 but only was correctly diagnosed with appendicitis in November, following CT scan results.

She had suffered a miscarriage due to septicaemia in July, and then lost her own life after undergoing three operations under Dr Naqvi in November and December of that year.

Mr Naqvi insists that he acted in good faith, saying Mrs Sherlock had been seen by a significant number of practitioners at three hospitals — Ennis, the maternity hospital in Limerick and in the regional in Limerick.

His counsel have also argued that he bears no responsibility in a delay in obtaining a CT scan, as such device was not in place at Clare’s County hospital.

The hearing resumes today.
