An MEP for this region has described the United Nations as a toothless tiger in its ability to ensure a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

It comes as the combined death toll on both sides has now surpassed 4,000 as the Israeli Defence Forces are expected to launch a ground offensive into Gaza in the coming days.

It’s been almost one week since Hamas breached Israel’s heavily fortified border and commenced a brutal killing spree which its now estimated has killed 1,200 civillians and 286 soldiers.

In response the Israeli Defence Forces has been bombarding the Gaza strip with retaliatory air strikes which its now estimated has claimed the lives of over 2,800 people, most of whom are once again civillians.

The situation continues to be at the forefront of foreign policy, with many heads of state meeting heavy criticism for their views.

Among them was Head of the European Commission , Ursula Von Der Leyen who met the backlash of President Michael D Higgins for failing to call for a military response in line with international guidelines from Israel.

The commissioner however has since pledged to open a humanitarian air bridge through Rafah which is a stretch of the border controlled by Egypt.

Although an MEP for this region believes the United Nations should be taking the lead on ensuring a peaceful solution to the conflict and not allowing the EU and the USA to have the bearing.

Ireland South Fine Gael MEP Seán Kelly says the UN’s Security Council has become a toothless tiger.

The Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland meanwhile believes the wider International community need to realise where the real threat lies.

United States President Joe Biden is set to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tomorrow and although he is expected to reaffirm his support for the state, the President has warned Israel not to occupy Gaza as the threat of a ground invasion looms.

It comes as the Irish Government are continuing its efforts to evacuate 40 citizens from the region as part of Israel’s forced evacuation of more than one million civillians to the north.

Hamas meanwhile has stated that 250 Israeli’s are being held as hostages.

However Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland and native of Gaza Dr. Jilan Abdalmajid (Jill-an Abdill-mahid) says while the actions of Hamas must be wholly condemned, the people of Gaza have been living as hostages for decades.
