RTÉ has declined a request from Clare County Council to resume the practice of playing the National Anthem at the end of programming each night.

The state broadcaster has told the local authority that the practice of playing the anthem was discontinued when broadcasting hours went beyond midnight, and that it now would be ‘cumbersome’ to interrupt programmes each evening.
RTÉ has also insisted that the measure would be counter-productive as a measure to strengthen Irish pride and nationhood.
Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Tony Mulqueen strongly disagrees.
