New agreement to open Vietnam adoptions again

There’s good news today for hundreds of Irish couples seeking to adopt a child from Vietnam.

The Vietnamese Justice Minister is in Dublin to sign an historic agreement with the Irish Adoption Authority of Ireland, paving the way for the resumption of adoptions.

Many Irish couples who had been in the process of adopting Vietnamese children  were stopped in their tracks when a bi-lateral adoption agreement lapsed in 2009.

It followed a series of scandals over fraudulent adoptions and concerns for child welfare.

However, those seeking to adopt may still face delays, as new safeguards in Vietnam mean there are fewer children available for adoption.
