The Chief Operating Officer of Ennis 2040 DAC insists pressing the reset button on development plans would set the town back six or seven years.

It follows the announcement from outgoing Councillor Johnny Flynn that he’s leaving the Fine Gael party, due to a lack of support from sitting Councillors over Ennis 2040 plans, which he opposes.

Outgoing Ennis Fine Gael councillor Johnny Flynn says he is “disappointed” by his former party colleagues’ views regarding proposals for the future of the town.

Councillor Flynn has formally announced his departure from the party, citing sitting Fine Gael councillors’ support for what he’s called the “destructive Council and Ennis 2040 DAC plans for Ennis town centre” as the primary reason for his exit.

The former Mayor of Ennis stated his intention three months ago not to seek re-election and claimed an “erosion of democracy” stemming from the creation of the the Ennis 2040 DAC had led to his decision.

Councillor Flynn says he “would’ve expected” other Fine Gael councillors present at last week’s appearance of the Ennis 2040 board before Clare County Council to speak up about the proposals.

Councillor Flynn has vowed to work and campaign as an independent citizen “against the controversial plans of the Council to hand over ownership or control of public lands” to Ennis 2040 DAC.

The lands in question are the Abbey Street civic space and car park, Parnel Street car park and the main taxi rank, and the Post Office field.

A new analysis carried out by Ennis 2040 DAC in conjunction with AIB found that annual spending in the county town is increasing at a slower rate than the national average.

COO of the Designated Activity Company, Kevin Corrigan believes there wouldn’t be enough time to arrest the decline of spending in the town, if they went back to the drawing board.
