Passenger Traffic At Shannon Airport Soars 23% Above Pre-Pandemic Levels

Passenger traffic at Shannon Airport has rebounded significantly above pre-pandemic levels.

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show almost 600,000 flyers were handled at the Clare base in the first six months of the year.

Approximately 576,065 passengers have either flown from or touched down at Shannon Airport so far this year.

The figure marks a 23% increase on the 468,000 flyers that used the MidWest facility during the same period of 2019 and 5% above the passenger traffic recorded from April to June of 2023.

Of the passengers that transited through Shannon this year, 288,384 made their way through the departure’s lounge while 287,681 landed on the tarmac of South-East Clare.

London-Heathrow and London-Stansted have remained the most popular services at Shannon Airport this year, handling over 138,000 passengers between them.

New York JFK was the most in demand transatlantic route, with 18,884 flying out to the Big Apple from Shannon, while 20,425 travelled in the opposite direction.

Faro Portugal remained the most popular flight within the European Union, with 24,900 passengers availing of the service to and from Shannon.

Services to and from the Spanish destinations of Alicante, Reus and Malaga meanwhile received a combined total of 57,358 passengers.

During the period of April to June, Shannon also handled over 43,000 tonnes of freight traffic and 3,813 freight flights.
