The prosecution in the trial of a man accused of murdering his uncle in Lisdoonvarna claims scientific evidence links him to the crime.

Thomas Lorigan, of no fixed abode, denies the murder of 79-year-old John O’Neill.

John O’Neill’s body was found on the floor of his home at St Brendan’s Road in Lisdoonvarna on the morning of the 7th of January 2022.

The prosecution claims his nephew, Thomas Lorigan, beat him to death there the night before.

Opening her case today, the prosecuting barrister, Eilis Brennan SC, told the jury they’d be shown CCTV footage of Mr O’Neill being assaulted outside his home.

She said the footage shows a man kicking him on the ground in a ferocious manner. She described it as a “vicious assault.”

It is the prosecution’s case that the man seen attacking him in that footage was his then 32yo nephew, the accused Thomas Lorigan.

She told the jurors Mr Lorigan’s clothes and steel cap boots were seized when he was arrested and she said scientific evidence links him to the assault of his uncle.

Mr Lorigan has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
