Welcome to another episode of Ours To Protect, as we take a closer look at biodiversity and sustainability in Co Clare.

Caher Bridge Garden is an award-winning garden nestled in a peaceful corner of the Burren near Fanore in North Clare.

A haven for biodiversity, the garden was created from what was once an area of dense hazel and blackthorn scrub with little or no soil.

Carl Wright created the garden with his own hands and he’ll host a special visit this Sunday as part of this year’s Burren In Bloom event.

Pat Flynn visited the spectacular biodiverse oasis in the Caher Valley.

Did You Know?

* Biodiversity is for 12 months of the year not just for a period of time. Also, ‘Biodiversity’ shouldn’t just be a buzzword, it should be a logical action. Always think long-term.

* Why should we stop at ‘Low Mow’ or  ‘No Mow’ May? What about the rest of the year? This is something that we should consider. Why leave an area unmowed for one month and then wipe away the habitats created there the following month?

* Anyone can create a garden or pond area on their own property even in a town. It is important to consider however, are you putting wildlife in danger or doing them a favour. If you live close to a roadway, consider whether wildlife might be endangered if they have to cross a road to reach your pond.
