A search has resumed for a young boy reported missing at the Cliffs of Moher in North Clare yesterday.

The alarm was raised shortly after 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon by the child’s family, who are believed to be visiting Ireland from overseas.

It’s understood the boy became separated from his family yesterday afternoon and they quickly began to search for him.

When there was no sign of him, they returned to the visitor centre and alerted emergency services.

Gardaí and the Irish Coast Guard were dispatched to the scene, while watch officers at the Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry promptly mounted a search operation.

The Doolin unit of the Coast Guard was also tasked to the scene and volunteers launched their Delta rigid inflatable boat, while other members made their way to the location by road to carry out a search of the cliff top area.

The Shannon based Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 115, and the Aran Islands all-weather lifeboat were also requested to assist the operation.

Early this morning, members of Clare Civil Defence travelled to the area and launched a drone in an effort to locate the child.

Conditions were poor at first but improved for a time, though visibility is being hampered by heavy mist.

Searches are continuing this afternoon.
