A group of Ennis women may be about to correct the gender inequality for the General Election in Clare by fielding several female candidates.

With 12 candidates confirmed for the Clare ballot paper so far, and not one woman among them, Clare FM has learned that a meeting was held in Ennis last night with a view to turning that trend around.

Already one Ennis woman has confirmed to Clare FM she plans to contest the General Election in Clare, and it’s understood she’s part of a larger group of concerned women who want to see more of a gender balance in politics.

Ann Cronin, a 35 year old,  mother of one,  has no previous political experience but has a background in psychology and a strong wish to see greater representation for women in politics, particularly in Co. Clare.

She and other women met in Ennis last night where plans to field up to 10 or even 12 women candidates were discussed, but it’s understood that figure is more likely to be three once the group submits its formal nominations to the county registrar later today or before the deadline for nominations at 12 noon tomorrow

And as the line up of Clare candidates continues to grow – Ennis General Hospital Development Committee Chairman Ciaran O’Dea from Mullagh is also reported to be putting his name forward for the election.
