Shannon Airport could soon be the home of a solar farm.

The airport authority has submitted an application to Clare County Council seeking permission to construct a renewable energy development which would have an area of over two hectares.

In an application lodged with the local authority on June 7th, the Shannon Airport Authority DAC has applied for planning permission for a 1.2 megawatt photovoltaic solar farm development in Rineanna South.

A photovoltaic or PV solar farm differs from other types of solar power as it supplies power at a utility level rather than to a local user or users.

The development would be located within the airfield on a site of approximately 2.25 hectares and would comprise linear arrays of solar photovoltaic panels on ground mounted frames with associated cabling and ducting.

The application also provides for a modular substation, inverters, a new internal site access road and all associated ancillary development works.

A decision must be reached on the application by August 1st while submissions have to be in by July 11th.

On the same day as the solar farm application was submitted, the Shannon Airport Authority DAC also applied for a development which would see a number of changes to the signage at the Midwest base.

The development would involve the removal of existing signage as well as the provision of four new gantry signs, five new directional totem signs, new road directional signage and necessary refurbishment works.
