Shannon Councillors want TV licence scrapped

Shannon Town Council has called on the government to scrap the television license.

Elected representatives in Clare’s second town last night passed a motion calling on the Ministers for Finance and Communications, Energy & Natural Resources to end the annual payment which has been in effect since the foundation of the state, save for during the civil war.

The majority of the money from the license fee goes to state broadcaster RTE, which Shannon Fine Gael Councillor Sean McLoughlin feels should now become self-sustainable
