Passenger numbers through Shannon Airport in 2012 were at their lowest since the 1980’s.

New end of year figures show 1.39 million people passed through the new independent international airport last year – a drop of over 230 thousand on 2011.

Its the fifth successive year of decline in passenger numbers

The vast majority of the decline in passenger figures comes from fewer US troops travelling to and from Iraq and Afghanistan via Ireland.

However with the airport now flying solo and a number of carriers extending services this year, coupled with The gathering – passenger numbers are expected to increase significantly over the coming years.
