It’s claimed Irish society has a responsibility to ensure that traditional farming practices in the Burren continue for generations to come.
The annual winterage sees cattle moved up into the limestone uplands in the Burren for the winter months, where grass is plentiful at this time of year, as opposed to housing them indoors.

It’s been practiced by farm families in the area for thousands of years and many continue to do so, while its significance has been recognised by its inclusion in a list of Ireland’s Living Cultural Heritage.
Michael Davoren of the IFA says the importance of winterage to the landscape in the Burren can’t be understated.
