Speicalist Emergency Geriatric Unit To Expand Operations At UHL This Winter

A Specialist unit aimed at improving the experience of older people attending the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick is expanding operations this winter.

The Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Unit, which opened in October 2022 , now has the capacity to assess twelve patients on a 24 hour basis from Monday to Thursday following recent renovations.

Suitable patients aged over 75 years and over who present at the ED are streamed at the point of triage to the unit.

Data from January to November shows that of the 1,788 patients seen, 1,042 patients were discharged to their home and 222 were transferred to a model 2 hospital such as Ennis, Nenagh or St.Johns.
