The outgoing Head of the Intensive Care Unit at the region’s main hospital says retention and recruitment of staff remains one of their biggest challenges.

ICU Consultant Dr. Catherine Motherway, who’s past President of the Intensive Care Society and was a leading figure during the pandemic is retiring today after more than four decades.

She says it was always her intention to retire at this stage, but that the past two years have been difficult for everyone and this solidified her decision.

Dr. Motherway says the silver lining of the pandemic is increased ICU beds at University Hospital Limerick, but she says staffing shortages, both here and internationally, are a major concern.
