Swimming restrictions have been put in place at six Clare beaches as a result of Storm Lillian.

Clare County Council is warning bathers attending Spanish Point, Lahinch, Kilkee, Cappagh Pier, White Strand Miltown Malbay and White Strand Doonbeg of the possibility of increased levels of bacteria in the water over the coming days due to heavy rainfall.

The advisory is a prior warning notice which is used as a precautionary approach to protect bathers’ health by advising the public of possible short-term pollution events which usually last for only a few days at most.

The restriction is expected to lift on Tuesday August 27th and in the meantime bathers are advised to reduce any risk of illness by avoiding swallowing or splashing water, washing hands before handling food, avoiding swimming with an open cut or wound and avoiding swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.

However the local authority has noted that higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness.
