The Taoiseach believes a proposal for Ennis to become the focus of a Government pilot plan aimed at bringing buildings back into residential use is a “good idea”.

Clare Independent TD Michael McNamara says many business premises which once had families living over them now lie empty over ground level, for reasons including building regulations and insurance costs.

The Scariff Deputy believes the pilot project would offer many benefits not just in housing, but also for the environment and society.

Speaking in the Dáil, Leo Varadkar indicated he wouldn’t be against the idea.
