Taoiseach to Step down as leader of Fianna Fail

The Taoiseach Brian Cowan has announced he is to step down as the Leader of Fianna Fail.

Brian Cowan has addressed the media at a press conference in Dublin this afteroon

Mr Cowan spoke of his respect and commitment to the Fianna Fail Party but acknowledged the concerns of members of the Fianna Fail party throughout the country regarding their election prospects.

It comes after one of the Taoiseach’s toughest week in politics after failed attempts to reshuffle his cabinet forced his to name a date for the General Election in March

The Taoiseach said his intention now was to concentrate on government buisness, and to allow the Fianna Fail party to elect a new leader a fight a good general election campaign.
