The cameras are filming activity in the vicinity of the Junction 13 Tulla/Scarriff exit on the motorway.

Concerns were expressed repeatedly following completion of the Ennis bypass in 2007 and since it was upgraded from dual-carriageway to motorway status in 2009.

The controversial redesignation led to claims that the interchanges at Junction 13 for Tulla/Scarriff and Junction 14 Barefield were “confusing, badly designed and badly laid out”.

When the route was further extended to Gort in Galway, similar concerns were raised in relation to Junction 15 at Crusheen.

A spokesperson for TII has confirmed that they have installed cameras as part of an evidence based approach to studying the interaction between the driver behaviour and the interchanges.

The study is expected to take a few months, so that driver behaviour during various times of day and weather conditions can be observed.
