The new state-of-the-art unit at Ennis General is now fully occupied for the first time.

The 50-bed facility first opened it’s doors to patients in September, but yesterday saw the transfer of an extra 25 patients into the Fergus Ward on it’s top floor.

The 15 million euro project saw the construction of Ireland’s first ‘Sari’ compliant medical unit, with all patients accommodated in single rooms in a bid to cut down on so-called ‘superbugs’.

Hospital manager Frank Keane feels the new unit shows a commitment to Ennis General, one which he insists will remain in place into the future.
