Tributes have been paid to one of the greats of Clare GAA who has passed away following an illness.

Kilmihil's Tom Downes was the first secretary of the Clare County Board, and was instrumental in the fight to obtain an open draw in the Munster Football Championship.

He also served for decades at provincial and national level, and was honoured at GAA Congress in 2010 after he retired from his position with the Ard Comhairle which he held for almost 30 years.

He worked as the liason office with the Clare Senior Footballers for many years, and was central to the development of the game in the county.

Tom is survived by his wife Mary, sons Eoin and Declan and daughters Yvonne and Sheila.

Chairman of Clare GAA Joe Cooney says Tom Downes was quite simply a legend
