Trolley Numbers Climb Slightly At UHL As HSE Advises Patients To Avoid EDs

Nurses say University Hospital Limerick remains the worst affected by overcrowding once again, with trolley numbers climbing slightly today.

The latest analysis from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation shows there were 110 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick this morning, 45 of those in the Emergency Department.

It comes as the HSE is advising patients to avoid EDs, where possible, and seek help from their GP or local injury clinic instead.

Surge plans are in place at a number of hospitals, due to the high prevalence of patients presenting at EDs with Covid-19, winter bug and flu-like symptoms.

The HSE’s Chief Operation Officer, Damien McCallion says the end is in sight for the flu season – but it won’t go quietly.

Meanwhile, the nurses union claims the HSE and the Government are solely to blame for dangerous and record levels of overcrowding in hospitals.

The INMO is considering balloting members for industrial action due to the dangers faced by patients and staff.

INMO Spokesperson, Colm Porter says not enough is being done to ease the crisis.
