UHL Say ‘Aging Population’ Big Factor In Repeated High Attendances At Emergency Department

The acting Chief Operations Officer at the region’s main hospital says the Midwest’s ‘aging population’ is a significant factor in repeated high attendances at its emergency department.

All elective activity and outpatient clinics at University Hospital Limerick are cancelled today, tomorrow and Friday ahead of what the UL Hospitals Group says will be a ‘busy’ long weekend.

The emergency department in Dooradoyle saw 35 percent higher attendances that 2019’s average in the 24 hours up to 8am yesterday morning.

Head of Strategy and Acting Chief Operations Officer with the UL Hospitals Group, Suzanne Dunne, says accommodating a large number of older patients at the hospital is proving challenging.
