The class at St Senan’s School in Kilrush, along with 117 other classes across the country was due to be scrapped as part of national cutbacks from this September following the announcement by Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe.

However, parents and teachers at the school argued that the students of the class could not be integrated back into mainstream education and faced no other choice but to send the children to another class in Ennis which wasn’t feasible.

The class has now been redesignated as a class for students with multiple disabilities and will be retained at the West Clare School.
