A West Clare councillor says rural areas are suffering due to the allocation of funding for road maintenance being based upon the population.

It comes as less than a third of regional roads in Clare received the top grade for surface condition last year.

The Pavement Surface Condition Index rates road conditions on a scale from 1 to 10 and saw less than a quarter of primary roads and less than 18% of secondary roads score the top grade in this county.

Fianna Fáil councillor from Lissycasey, PJ Kelly, says the county’s high mileage but lower population means it doesn’t get the funding it should.
