Widow Of Clare Man Killed In Boeing Plane Crash Calls For Urgent Overhaul Of Safety Standards

The widow of a Clare man killed in a Boeing plane crash five years ago is calling for an urgent overhaul of safety standards, after the company finalised a guilty plea deal for violating a settlement in relation to a series of fatal incidents.

In 2018, Lahinch Humanitarian Aid worker Mícheál ‘Mick’ Ryan and 157 others were killed when the 737 Max they were travelling on crashed shortly after take-off in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Yesterday, Boeing agreed to pay a fine of €224m and to spend over €400m on improving internal safety and compliance programmes for making false presentations about key software aboard the 737 Max.

The judge presiding over the case, Justice Reed O’Connor will decide next week whether to accept the deal and if Boeing owes compensation to the victims relatives.

Micheál’s Wife, Naoise Connolly Ryan insists regardless of the outcome, culture must change at the company to save lives.
