Obesity Treatment Should Focus On Health Gain Over Weight Loss

Research published in The Lancet has recommended a change in how health services view treatment of obesity – that the target should be lifelong health gain rather than weight loss.

The Irish Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism says treatments for the disease are needed lifelong to have health benefit.

It says the different complications of obesity make it hard to identify a single realistic weight goal suitable for all patients.

For more on this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Dr Máire Finn, GP from the Centric Health Medical Centre in Ennis and Leanne O’Driscoll, from Meelick, who ended up with sepsis and septic shock after travelling to Turkey to avail of gastric sleeve surgery.
