Potential Closure Of GP Services In Kilrush

On Wednesday’s Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Deirdre Culligan, a former Kilrush Town Councillor and a member of the Reinstate Our Shannondoc Services group to discuss the lacking GP services in Kilrush.

The HSE is being called upon to urgently prioritise the recruitment of a GP for a Kilrush facility that is understood to be facing imminent closure.

It comes amid growing uncertainty in the West Clare town that one of its practices, in which the resident doctor has been on sick leave for an extended period is set to cease operations.

The development would leave the region with just two practices and three doctors, as well as the out-of-hours weekend service at Shannon Doc to serve a population of 2,649 people.

Concerns are now growing that if the practice shuts, other GP services in the town will not be able to facilitate patient appointments.

Clare FMs Daragh Dolan also spoke to Ian Lynch who is Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District and a Kilrush Independent Councillor on the issue.
