Avenue United & Newmarket Celtic Revert To Winning Ways In Clare Premier Division

Avenue United & Newmarket Celtic have returned to winning ways in the first round of Premier Division fixtures in the Clare District Soccer League of 2023.

The two most successful teams in Clare soccer played out a 2-2 draw in McDonough park back in December before departing for the Christmas break.

This morning however Newmarket Celtic came from behind to decisively defeat Kilrush Rangers by six goals to one with Eoin Hayes, Harvey Cullinan, Martin McCarthy, Darragh Leahy and David McCarthy with a brace all finding the back of the net.

Meanwhile the defending champions overcame fourth place Bridge United by three goals to one thanks to efforts from Conor Mullen and Elias Kunz.

The results mean Newmarket Celtic’s unbeaten record remains intact this season as the record title holders sit in first place on twenty-two points after eight games, three points ahead of closest challengers, Avenue United in second.

There were also victories for Shannon Town and Lifford in the Premier Division.

A heavy 8-1 defeat for Mountshannon Celtic at the hands of Shannon Town sees the East Clare side remain at the foot of the table as the only pointless side in the division, while Tulla United’s 1-0 defeat to Lifford sees them occupy the second relegation spot, three points adrift from safety.
