Banner Issue Stunning Comeback To Down The Déise In Munster Hurling League

A Clare side which produced several fresh faces throughout the hour pulled out all the stops to secure a deserved two point victory over Waterford in the Munster Hurling League.

Despite trailing by four points at the interval, the Banner would issue a strong second half showing to finish their Munster Hurling League campaign on a high.

Aidan McCarthy was scorer in chief for Clare in the opening period, showing unerring accuracy from placed balls as the home side started brightly leading by 0-04 to 0-02 after eighteen minutes.

However the Déise would soon find their rhythm outscoring Clare by 1-06 to 0-03 in the second quarter with a Stephen Bennet penalty on the stroke of half-time ensuring Waterford led by 1-08 to 0-07 at the interval.

Clare would leave any lacklustre notions well in the rear view mirror on the restart as Mark Rodgers, Ian Galvin , Aidan McCarthy and Keith Smyth all split the posts while the new midfield pairing of David Fitzgerald and Paddy Donnellan began to dominate proceedings.

Kilmaley’s Gearóid O’Grady and Parteen-Meelick’s Jack Kirwan made their Senior inter-county debuts from the bench as Clare faced into the final twenty minutes level at 0-16 to Waterford’s 1-13.

David Conroy and David McInerney would add further points for Clare to cancel out Déise scores from Stephen Bennett and Reuben Halloran before new addition to the county panel Brandon O’Connell found Aaron Shanagher on the edge of the square with a brilliant searching ball who would make no mistake with the finish.

However Mikey Kiley would immediately reply with a goal of his own for Waterford to leave just two points between the sides with as many minutes remaining at 1-22 to 2-16.

Nevertheless Inagh-Kilnamona team mates David Fitzgerald and Aidan McCarthy showed all their experience to point in the closing stages to ensure Clare ran out winners on a final score of Clare 1-24 to Waterford 2-19 in Cusack Park.
