Its been a mixed day so-far for the Irish team on the opening day of the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

Rob Heffernan narrowly missed out on a medal after he finished fourth in the 20k walk while David Gillick won his heat in the 400 metres to book a place in the semi finals, where he’ll be joined by Gordon Kennedy.

There was disappointment for all three of our women’s 400 metre runners, as well as for Kelly Proper in the long-jump.

This evening’s session will see Jason Smyth and Paul Hession involved in the first round of the 100 metres while Roseanne Galligan competes in the 800 metres.

And

Its just over 24 hours now before Ennis man Rory Chesser takes part in the European Athlethics championship in Barcelona.

The 23 year will be competiting at his first European Championships having qualified  2 weeks ago in Sweden.

The Ennis man will have Thomas Chammney for company in the semi final of the 150 metres on Wednesday evening with the race beginning at 7-30 Irish time.
