There will be plenty celebrations in South-East Clare tonight as Newmarket-On-Fergus claimed Minor A Camogie honours in style in a fiercely contested battle with Clarecastle-Ballyea this evening at Cusack Park.

Led by the superb Gráinne McMahon in midfield, the Blues opened their account in the opening minutes from a 45.

Clarecastle-Ballyea would reply in kind though, in what was a closely fought encounter with Ivanna Costelloe firing over before Evie Scanlon and McMahon traded scores from play and placed balls to leave the tie evenly poised at 0-03 apiece after twenty minutes.

Scanlon would add another free before the break, which was soon matched by Newmarket full-forward Aoibhe O’Leary to ensure nothing separated the sides, which departed to the dressing rooms at the half-time whistle on a scoreline of 0-04 to 0-04.

Newmarket-On-Fergus came out of the blocks the sharper on the restart, with McMahon and O’Leary pointing in quick succession to establish a two-point cushion.

Evie Scanlon’s unerring accuracy from set plays would soon bring parity to the scoreboard levelling the tie at 0-06 to 0-06 by the fortieth minute.

Both sides defences were well on top in the contest and kept scoring chances few and far between, with Clarecastle-Ballyea’s Holly Morgan particularly impressive making a string of vital saves.

The key moment of the day would come shortly after as a Newmarket 21-metre free was fired at goal and although the effort was well stopped by Morgan, Sammi O’Looney was on hand to bundle the rebound to the net.

Newmarket wouldn’t relent from this juncture with late scores from O’Looney and Aoibhe O’Leary securing the win on a full-time score of 1-08 to 0-06.
